Fall has got to be one of the best times to take a Vegas golf trip. The golf courses in Las Vegas are in great condition with new winter ryegrass playing conditions and perfect daytime temperatures. After golf one can take in the exciting action on the blackjack tables, slots, video poker machines or get a seat in one of the busy poker rooms. Cap that off with exciting college and NFL football in full swing. You can procure a seat in the Sports Book and take in a ton of gridiron action, cheer for your parlay to come through. While you can’t bet on the local UNLV team, wagers are accepted on nearly all other college games and every NFL game. I have even heard of a few casinos allowing new mid-game wage...

A lot has been talked about in the golf industry about the need “reset” our expectations as it relates to golf course conditioning and playability as recent efforts are being made to embrace new agronomic practices. Many courses throughout the country are embracing concerted efforts for water conservation, sustainability and delivering “firm/fast” playing conditions. These new practices will provide course operators with more sustainable maintenance practices and will ultimately conserve a very precious resource…water. In fact, the President of the USGA, Jim Hyler was recently quoted in the Wall Street Journal (on May 7) on this topic: “Playability should replace aesthetics as a primary consideration. Playability sh...

It often goes unnoticed how much area golf professionals do for their respective communities. Nearly every day, a golf professional or golf industry staffer gives back in some way shape or form. Each week local professionals are helping local charities put together charity golf tournaments that raise money for much needed causes. They fulfill (as best they can) the many donation request for charitable events. At OB Sports facilities, they put together Charity All Stars sessions which help show local non-profits how to raise money using golf. We even have many of our professionals and tournament experts help coordinate special events and ball drops to again… help area charities. Our professionals support national fundraising programs like Patriot Golf Days (raises money for...

Not sure if you saw but ten OB Sports-managed golf courses (at eight facilities) made Golfweek’s ranking of 2010 Best Courses You Can Play in their respective states. This was pretty cool when you think that ten courses nearly represents a third of the OB Sports collection of facilities. It tells me that OB Sports is certainly operating some truly spectacular golf facilities that are amongst the favorites to play within their respective markets.
The annual ranking lists the top public-access golf clubs in each state. Of the hundreds of eligible public courses within each state, (depending on the state) only a few clubs make the list. Course-ranking panelists apply the following criteria when considering each golf course: 1) ease and intimacy of routing, the extent to whic...

The Central Oregon, Bend-area in Oregon is one of those emerging golf destinations that needs to be on the must travel to list for every well traveled golf nut. The area is highlighted by high desert landscape and breathtaking mountain ranges. The climate is arid and the area gets a lot less rain than what your perception might be of Oregon (making for a great golfing climate). The course that is in the news as of late is the new Tetherow Golf Club. Designed by David McLay Kidd (the same architect who designed Bandon Dunes and The Castle Course at St. Andrews. The visually striking Tetherow Golf Club is a par 72, 7298 yard layout that opened in July of 2008. In it’s short history, Tetherow has been decorated by awards and accolades included being ranked as the #1 Best New Cours...

As the recognized leader in boutique style golf course management, many times we at OB Sports get asked “how is the Golf Industry doing?” or “how is the economy affecting Golf?”
Well, the golf industry is not immune to the slowdown in the economy…we are faced with many of the challenges that other small and medium sized businesses are facing throughout the country (and world for that matter). Courses in destination markets are challenged with a national slowdown in tourism/travel, while all courses across the board have been fighting rising expenses and costs in their larger line items such as healthcare, property taxes, water, equipment costs, etc, for really the past 5+ years.
However, recent data from Golf Datatech is encoura...
